Secretary Locke's Greeting Speech to
U.S.- China Business Summit
Gary Locke US Secretary of Commerce
  Gary Locke
US Secretary of Commerce

Hi,

I’m Gary Locke, US Secretary of Commerce. And I am delighted to welcome everyone attending the U.S.-China Business Summit.

Let me fi rst begin by making a direct appeal to all of you here today. Please do whatever you can to get your communities engaged in the 2010 Census, which is just beginning a few months from now. The census doesn’t just count every American; it also helps to decide how every year over 400 billion dollars of federal funds will be allocated to states and localities, including vital funds for economic development. So it makes good business sense to help spread the word in your communities that everyone needs to participate in the 2010 Census. And I hope you will do whatever you can to help.

The people gathered here today already have an impressive track record of outreach and engagement. You have helped make the United States and China have one of the largest and the most important trading relationships in the world. It is to our mutual benefi ts to ensure this relationship continues to grow and prosper. Summits like these, which bring together over a thousand of business owners and entrepreneurs from Chinese American communities and business delegations from China are an important step toward this goal.

The Obama Administration is committed in building a positive trade relationship with China, marked by openness and engagement. We are working closely through such vehicles as this strategic and economic dialogue, the joint commission on commerce and trade, and the Asia-pacifi c economic cooperation to address trade frictions and strengthen commercial ties between our countries. I visited China few times last year and had an opportunity to see the tremendous opportunities available to both American and Chinese businesses in new growth industries, like clean and renewable energy. At the same time, I participated in frank discussions with our Chinese colleagues about issues of concern, like intellectual property protection and fair market access for American companies. There are difficult issues, but so long as we continue to have productive dialogue, I am confi dent we can continue to make progress. And this conference is an important part of that ongoing dialogue. I extend my best wishes for a most successful summit.

Thank you very much.
